Cristóbal Balenciaga opened its first own tailor salon for women's fashion in San Sebastián, Spain in 1917. Soon he founded the first larger company with partners. After his emigration to France, he presented his first haute couture collection in 1937. His designs were soon delivered to the addresses of the most exclusive department stores. The stars of the time worshiped the designs of Balenciagas and helped him to his legendary status. His sometimes architecturally looking designs met on Spanish pride, flamenco skirts, grinding and other traditional elements were skilfully integrated into designs. With the death of the company founder, heavy years came to the company. Only a few years later, only perfumes were offered under the name of the brand. A restart experienced the company in 1989 under the creative direction of Michel Goma. The reintroduction of a prêt-à-porter collection turned out to be sustainable success. Nexter was still designed for large customers such as airlines and hotels. Under the direction of Nicolas Ghesquière, from 1997, the company became increasingly in the media. His experimental collections were often futuristic and expressive. As a source of inspiration, he served again and again old designs of Cristóbal Balenciaga. Ghesquière in 2000 introduced the Balenciaga handbags First and City and 2001 the model Lariat, which all developed into IT-Bags, for which, in part, due to the high demand, waiting lists had to be set up. In October 2015, Demna Gvasalia took over the creative direction, previously known with his own fashion brand VETMENTS. For the summer 2021, the first haute couture collection has been expected since 1968. Meanwhile, the company belongs to the kering group, a world-fitting network of over 150 boutiques grants the clientele comfortable access to the assortment of the house. Today, Balenciaga represents one of the most sought-after brands in the high-priced fashion segment. With fancy sneakers, extravagant handbags and many other accessories, the brand is now also achieving a recent target group.
