“Fashions fade, style is eternal”
Yves Saint Laurent was one of the most influential fashion designers and couturiers of the 20th century. He was born in Algeria as a descendant of French emigrants. After moving to France, he honed his craft under none other than Christian Dior and, following Dior’s death, took over the creative direction of the house. His very first collection was a resounding success and freed women’s fashion from the wasp waist. Over the decades, Yves Saint Laurent was also responsible for further groundbreaking trends: women’s trouser suits and the use of jersey in the luxury segment are associated with his name. He was also one of the first designers to use sheer fabrics in his creations. The iconic dresses inspired by Piet Mondrian’s paintings, created in 1965, also date back to Yves Saint Laurent. During his lifetime, Saint Laurent was often referred to as a “revolutionary” of the fashion world.
Bags from the long-established French house Saint Laurent are often distinguished by their clean lines. Combined with glossy monogram details, the bags have a distinctive, elegant visual language. Their high prices are no coincidence, as much of their appeal lies in the choice of materials. The label’s bags are among the highest quality available. Some versions also feature a chevron quilting on the outer leather, beautifully echoing and visualising the initial letter of Yves’ first name.
Over the years, many iconic Saint Laurent bag models have been launched. Among the most popular are certainly the Chyc Ligne, Sunset and Kate bags, as well as the Cassandre line. The models differ in details and are offered in various sizes. The popular Saint Laurent Classic Baby Duffle Bag is a miniature version of a classic weekender. With their clean lines, the Sac De Jour bags are among the most elegant of all. The Mombasa model is equally unique: the handles are usually made from genuine horn, feature glossy hardware and have been offered in various versions over the years.
Both belong to the same brand. Previously, the full name was “Yves Saint Laurent”. Since a change in 2012, the fashion house has officially been known as “Saint Laurent” or “Saint Laurent Paris”. That is why newer bags carry the shorter name, even though it remains the same fashion house.
The well-known monogram with the interwoven letters Y, S and L remained in place after the name change. It is a historic logo of the brand and continues to be used on many bags.
